It is now 2010. As many resolutions go we aim to improve our lives in one way or another in the up coming year. My goal (including our family) is to improve our lives, while making an improved (or “reduced”) impact on the world around us.
My inspiration came from reading an amazing book by Colin Beavan titled “No Impact Man”.
In this book he, his wife and young daughter, living in the heart of New York City attempt to make a net-zero environmental impact on the world for one year in terms of garbage, carbon emissions, pollutants, and removed toxins from their home through their product choices, among others. All while maintaining as normal a lifestyle as possible. To their discovery they learn many things about themselves and what our society has become. Truly Inspirational! See www.noimpactman.com for more details.
This brings me to “My 2010″.
With the enlisted commitment from our family of 4, our goals include:
1. Reducing the amount of trash/garbage and recycling output from our house. I plan to weigh and track our monthly output.
2. Reduce the amount of utilities consumed by our household, while living comfortably. (Natural gas, electricity, water, gasoline, etc.)
4. Be more involved in our community and help make an difference in other people’s lives as well.
3. Reduce household toxins by carefully examining the products that we use and reduce the negative impact of plastics on our lives.
Wish us luck, we will keep you posted on our progress to reduce our environmental footprint and how achievable this should be to anyone living in a city like Edmonton.
Please leave a comment when you come to visit and encourage others to follow our progress as well.
